Former Rockland Resident Celebrates 'Manchester By The Sea' Win

As it happens every season, those with ties to the Hudson Valley saw their share of Oscar nods at the 89th annual Academy Awards, held Sunday, Feb. 26 in Los Angeles.

Casey Affleck won an Oscar for "Best Actor" in "Manchester by the Sea," which Hudson Valley resident Declan Baldwin executive produced.

Declan Baldwin, a Yonkers native who lived in Nyack for 20 years who began his career as a production assistant in New York City, saw "Manchester by the Sea," which he executive produced, win Oscars in two of the six categories it was nominated in.

The two winners were Casey Affleck for "Best Actor," and Kenneth Lonergan for "Best Original Screenplay."

Baldwin, who now splits his time between New York City and Woodstock, is the founding member of the New York-based production company Big Indie Pictures. His TV credits as a producer include "Z The Beginning of Everything," and the HBO Original Films production of The Laramie Project.

Among the others with Hudson Valley ties: Meryl Streep, a graduate of Vassar College in Poughkeepsie who was up for "Best Actress" for her role in “Florence Foster Jenkins." (she lost to Emma Stone for "La La Land") and “Life, Animated,” a documentary based on a book that Kingston native Ron Suskind wrote. "Life, Animated" was directed by part-time Hudson Valley resident Roger Ross Williams, a previous Oscar winner. This time around, however, it did not win.
