SUFFERN, N.Y. -- Happy birthday to Suffern's Valerie Harper.
The actress is turning 77 on Monday.
Harper was born on Aug. 22, 1939 in Suffern, but she and her family moved regularly, since her father was a lighting salesman.
Harper is best known for her role of Rhoda Morgenstern, which she played for over a decade, first on "The Mary Tyler Moore Show," then in its spinoff, "Rhoda." Between the two shows, she won four Primetime Emmys and a Golden Globe award.
Harper moved from dancing on Broadway to minor television and film roles, before breaking out with "The Mary Tyler Moore Show." Over the years, she had a wide variety of other roles, on television and film.
In 2013, she was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer -- and nonetheless competed on season 17 of "Dancing with the Stars" that fall. She didn't win, but many viewed her performance as inspiring.
At one point, she told the audience, "I'm way past my expiration date and I'm dancing."
