NEW CITY, N.Y. -- According to John Monahan, there are few things that light up a 45-year-old mother or father of four the same way it lights up each one of their children. And that, he says, is ice cream.

The New City resident should know. After years working for his father in the luxury limousine business, he started SweetGuy Ice Cream Truck in 2011. Now, the entrepreneur who grew up in Blauvelt, spends Memorial Day through Labor Day driving through the southern part of the county from noon to 9 p.m. each day, weather permitting.

The idea of making ice cream dreams come true occurred by happenstance when he was driving around in Long Island and got stuck behind an ice cream truck. "It only took me a few minutes to see how popular he was and how everyone got so lit up when he arrived," explained Monahan. So, he stuck around and chatted with the truck's owner, a kind man named Larry, and soon set his vision in place.

The SweetGuy Truck, a renovated 1975 Chevy P20 originally built by Chevy for Good Humor, carries sweet treats to Orangeburg, Pearl River, Blauvelt, Tappan, Nanuet, and New City. Monahan prides himself on offering “60 different choices in delicious ice cream confections."

“Whenever I pull up, the parents and the kids are doing their little ice cream dance and I love it!," he said. "Everyone is 8-years-old again when I arrive."

And the sugary blitz doesn't end there. Monahan is doing more parties and corporate events than ever before and was excited this past year to do a bunch of "field days" at area elementary schools.

The SweetGuy franchise also includes Monahan's second truck, the "Candy Man," which he acquired in the summer of 2010. He also added a new truck and has hopes of eventually having a fleet of sweets (so to speak) involved in everything from distribution to vending.

With Rockland being such a driveable county, chances are you'll see his truck rolling through your neighborhood soon enough, but if you can’t wait, SweetGuy Ice Cream can be contacted at (845) 499-5480, via email at SweetGuyIceCream@gmail or at www.sweetguyicecream.com/ . You can also follow his progress on Facebook .
