Rockland Ready For Memorial Day Celebrations

ROCKLAND COUNTY, N.Y. -- Rockland residents will have a variety of parades and activities to celebrate and honor veterans for serving the country on Memorial Day including:

Friday, May 26:

Clarkstown:  A celebration honoring all U.S. veterans will be held from 11 a.m. to noon at the Street Community Center. Brig. General John F. Hussey will serve as the guest speaker. Attendees will want to visit the “Hall of Heroes” — “History Room.” Refreshments will be served after the program.

Sunday, May 28: 

Tappan: The Raymond De Meola VFW Memorial Post No. 1615 of Blauvelt will host a memorial ceremony at 10 a.m. at the Walkway of Heroes on Lester Drive.

New Hempstead: The Rockland County Veterans’ Coordinating Council will hold a ceremony at noon at the Frederick Loecher Veterans Cemetery on Brick Church Road.

Suffern: The Rockland County Veterans’ Coordinating Council annual ceremony takes place at 1 p.m. at Gary Onderdunk Veterans Cemetery at Rockland Community College, College Road, Suffern. Following the ceremony, attendees will pay respects to Korean War Veterans.

Monday, May 29: 

Nyack: Nyack will hold a parade at 11 a.m. beginning at the municipal lot, continues onto Broadway and ends at Memorial Park.

Pearl River: The John H. Secor American Legion Post 329 of Pearl River will hold their annual parade at 10:15 a.m. from Niagara First Bank on North Middletown Road. From Middletown Road, the parade heads south to East Central Avenue and down East Central Avenue to Braunsdorf Park. Guest speakers will feature Marine veteran Noel Heffernan, commander of American Legion Post 329 in Pearl River, and Army veteran Christopher Day.

Haverstraw: Several ceremonies in the area include celebrations at 9 a.m. at Haverstraw Town Hall, One Rosman Road; 9:20 a.m. at Calico Hill Veteran's Memorial, Railroad Avenue, Garnerville; 9:45 a.m. at the Civil War Monument, Hudson Avenue, Haverstraw; 10:15 a.m. at the World War II Monument, Clove Avenue, Haverstraw, and 11 a.m. at the World War I Monument, at the Mount Repose Cemetery.   

Suffern: The Fromm-Maxwell-DeBaun American Legion Post 859 will hold its annual parade at 11 a.m. from Lot A, at Orange and Lafayette avenues, to the Soldiers Monument on Washington Avenue. A ceremony follows the parade at the Soldiers Monument.

Tappan: The Carl A. Schelin American Legion Post 1271 will hold their 70th annual Memorial Day parade at 11 a.m. Co-sponsored by the Volunteer Fire Association of Tappan, the parade starts on Western Highway and proceeds to the Tappan Reformed Church Green, where ceremonies will be held. Free hot dogs and drinks will follow the event.

Sloatsburg: The village and the Sloatsburg American Legion Post 1643 will hosts a celebration and parade, beginning at 10 a.m., at the Veterans Memorial Park, adjacent to the Sloatsburg Municipal Building and concludes at the Sloatsburg Cemetery. Refreshments follow the parade.

New Hempstead: The Rockland County Veterans’ Coordinating Council will present a Memorial Day Ceremony at noon the Frederick Loecher Veterans Cemetery on Brick Church Road in New Hempstead.

Rockland: Rockland's annual parade kicks off at 10 a.m. in front of the VFW Post in Piermont. Watchfires for the troops who perished during the war will be lit at midnight at the end of the Piermont Pier and burn for 24 hours at four locations including Bowline Point Park in Haverstraw, Eugene Levy Memorial Park in Pomona, Clausland Mountain in Orangeburg, and the Piermont Pier.
