The Ramapo Police Department released surveillance video and offered tips to residents that may encounter a bear after this one approached the Sloatsburg resident in his backyard.

According to the United States National Park Services, if one encounters a bear, they should remain calm and remember that the animal likely doesn’t want to attack and prefers simply to be left alone.

In Sloatsburg, the resident was able to quickly back away from the bear and return to his home after spotting it.

If approached by a bear, the National Park Services notes that one should move away slowly and sideways - which allows for keeping an eye on the bear and avoid tripping - but should not run. However, if the bear is to follow, one should stop and hold their ground.
