AIRMONT, N.Y. -- Who has the spookiest house in Airmont? Judging from images of entries in the inaugural Halloween House-Decorating Contest on the village's website, few can argue with Mayor Phil Gigante: "People go all out."
The Mayor's 2nd Annual Halloween House Decorating Contest is underway through Friday, Oct. 28.
Gigante launched the tradition to bring the community together. The event caught on, so a holiday house-decorating contest followed in December. It will be reprised this year, said Gigante.
But first, there's Halloween.
"People go overboard with decorations, and I love it. I think it's great. My aunt used to do it. I've seen other municipalities do something like this. The residents seem to like it. Last year it was a hit."
One thing that's changed over the previous year is how the judging will be done, Gigante noted.
"Last year, I was new, had just been elected, and it was trial and error. I did whoever got the most likes on Facebook. But some of the people who go all out said, 'Hey. Listen. I spent way more time. Just because someone has more friends on Facebook they got more votes. "So for the holiday (house decorating contest) we had a bunch of kids from the community go around and vote. This year for the Halloween contest we will have volunteer judges go personally to the houses," he explained.
Airmont residents can join the contest by Oct. 28. To enter, simply upload a photo to the village's Facebook page here.
The winner will be announced Monday, Oct. 31, and receive a $100 gift card. The home will be featured in a village newsletter.
