'Blockbusting' Pressures Rockland Residents to Sell Their Homes

ROCKLAND COUNTY, N.Y. -- Residents across Rockland County say they have been barraged with real estate agents knocking on their doors pressuring them to sell their homes, according to lohud.com.

Airmont Mayor Philip Gigante said this phenomenon, known as "blockbusting," is not new to the area and that many of his residents are concerned with the aggressive campaign, said lohud.com.

The same thing has been happening in Ramapo, Chestnut Ridge, Hillcrest and other towns where a large population of ultra-Orthodox Jewish families has been moving to the area, making it the third-fastest growing in the state, added lohud.com.

Officials said it is illegal to solicit without a permit, and many towns offer signs "no soliciting" signs for residents to post. Once posted, any solicitors could face up to $1,000 fine, said lohud.com.
