The vehicle was traveling southbound in Tuxedo in Orange County at around 9:15 p.m. with the fireworks in the rear of the vehicle, state police said.

The occupants, from the Mount Vernon area, smelled smoke before the fireworks began to ignite with the Navigator quickly becoming fully engulfed in flames, causing three occupants of the vehicle to sustained relatively minor burns, and two other occupants to sustained more severe burns, police said.

The two occupants with the more severe burns were airlifted to Westchester Medical Center for treatment.

The incident closed all lanes between Exit 15A and the Harriman tolls. There were also rubbernecking, stop-and-go delays on the northbound side.

The fire, and igniting fireworks, were extinguished by Woodbury Fire Dept.

State police are continuing to investigate the incident.
