ROCKLAND COUNTY, N.Y. -- A Spring Valley man who was driving drunk caused an hours-long power outage in Ramapo after he crashed a box truck into a utility pole around 9:20 p.m. Sunday, bringing down power lines on top of his vehicle, police said.
Following the crash, Orange and Rockland Utilities responded and shut off power to the wires. The Spring Valley and South Spring Valley Fire Departments then extricated the driver, Wojciech Niespodziewanski, 34, from the vehicle.
He was charged with felony DWI, police said.
More than 300 residences were without power following the crash that also closed the roadway as O&R crews worked to restore power, and the truck and the utility pole were removed.
Police said Niespodziewanski suffered minor injuries and was transported to Good Samaritan for treatment. He was transported back to the Ramapo Police Department where he was charged and processed.
Ramapo police were assisted by the South Spring Valley Fire Department, Hatzolah Ambulance, Orange and Rockland Utilities, and Verizon.
