The department recently added two new drones to their crime fighting arsenal, which will allow them better access to view traffic accidents, search for suspects and locate potentially missing people. They can also be used in hostage and standoff situations, according to police.
In order to use the drones, the department had to be vetted by the Federal Aviation Administration and has been granted a Certificate of Authorization to operate the drones.
According to the Fox News report, a dozen officers are currently training to be drone pilots, and if there if they need to fly somewhere that there is an expectation of privacy, they will get a warrant before proceeding. The department currently has two officers that are FAA certified drone operators.
Police debuted the new drones at a demonstration earlier this month, explaining that the drones will not be weaponized, or used for routine patrol, ordinance violations or unwarranted surveillance.
