Rep. Nita Lowey (D-Harrison) is demanding action following the death of 58 people in a shooting in Las Vegas Sunday night at a country music festival. More than 500 people were injured.
Lowey said a ban on assault weapons was necessary and Congress must pass legislation to block any attempt to make it easier for shooters to go undetected.
"Inaction is unacceptable," Lowey said. “Over 1,500 mass shootings have happened since 20 children were gunned down at Sandy Hook Elementary School, and now we have witnessed the worst mass shooting in U.S. history. What will it take for us to embrace our responsibility to act?”
County Executive Ed Day said there were no words to describe what happened.
"The collective prayers from all of us here in Rockland goes out to the victims and their families of this mass shooting," Day said. We stand with our sister municipality during this tragic time.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced flags will be flown at half-staff from Oct. 2 through Oct. 6 in honor of the victims.
"My heart aches for its victims and their loved ones on this darkest of days," Cuomo said. "How many more times must we see the effects of gun violence and feel the devastating effects of these shootings before we act as a country and as a people?"
Cuomo said security measures will be added at key points around the state as a precaution.
"The safety of New Yorkers and our visitors is our number one priority, and we are remaining vigilant and in close contact with local and federal officials and our partner law enforcement agencies," Cuomo said.
President Donald Trump said he was filled with sadness, shock, and grief and thanked first responders for saving lives.
"Hundreds of our fellow citizens are now mourning the sudden loss of a loved one -- a parent, a child, a brother or sister," Trump said. "We cannot fathom their pain. We cannot imagine their loss. To the families of the victims: We are praying for you and we are here for you, and we ask God to help see you through this very dark period."
