MONSEY, N.Y. — An Orthodox rabbi was sentenced following the conviction of nine other Jewish men who were brought down in an undercover FBI operation spanning New York and New Jersey, lohud.com reports.
Martin Wolmark, 57, will spend three years behind bars for being part of a ring that coerced religious divorces from men using intimidating and violent tactics, lohud.com reports.
A religious divorce, known as a get, is required by Jewish law to make it official. Wolmark had pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit extortion, lohud.com reports. The leader of the ring was Rabbi Mendel Epstein, 70, of Lakewood. He is being sentenced on Tuesday, Dec. 21 lohud.com says.
