The two, among the 10 most wanted in Tennessee where they are facing attempted murder and kidnapping charges, broke into a home in Bloomingburg in Sullivan County Saturday.
The invasion left the 66-year-old homeowner hospitalized with a head injury, according to the Times Herald-Record.
Neighbors had observed a car parked on the street before the home invasion, but it was too dark out for them to provide a description of the vehicle, the report said.
The fugitives, 24-year-old Jarret Cole Heitmann and 22-year-old Makayla Danielle Stilwell, are armed and extremely dangerous, according to police.
Following the home invasion, there was what state police describe as a "verified sighting" of Heitmann and Stilwell at a Walmart in Matamoras, Pa., on Saturday at 7:30 a.m., several hours after the Orange County home invasion.
Matamoras is located about 30 miles from where the home invasion occurred in the Hudson Valley. Matamoras is located at the point in the Delaware Water Gap where the borders of New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania join.
Heitmann and Stilwell are believed to be boyfriend and girlfriend.
All police agencies in the Hudson Valley have been made aware of the Pennsylvania sighting and the investigation is continuing, state police said.
Heitmann is described as being 6-foot-1, 165 pounds with brown hair and hazel eyes.
Stilwell is 5-foot-9, 145 pounds with brown hair and green eyes.
The two are accused of shooting a 34-year-old man in Tennessee this past Tuesday and then kidnapping a woman they allegedly used as bait in the attack, according to the Johnson City Press. The shooting victim remains hospitalized with a chest wound sustained after the woman was reportedly forced by the fugitives to knock on the man's door in order to get him to exit his mobile home.
It is unclear when the fugitives fled east and what day they arrived in the Hudson Valley.
State Police are searching the area and ask the public to report any information to the State Police in Middletown at 845-344-5300 or the State Police barracks in Wurtsboro at 845-888-2494.
