Shortly before 7:30 a.m. on July 26, police were dispatched to 37-year-old Artemio Gonzalez’s Prospect Street home, where there were reports of a man “going crazy, destroying and hitting the kids,” Spring Valley Police Lt. J. E. Bosworth said at the time of the incident.
Police said that Gonzalez was acting irrationally and violently at the time, throwing items around the kitchen. After ripping a stove top off of the oven and throwing it at the first officer on scene, the two struggled, and Gonzalez repeatedly tried to stab the officer, striking him once in the torso with a knife.
Gonzalez would be subsequently subdued by a second officer using a Taser.
According to a document filed in Rockland County Court this week, a judge ruled that 37-year-old Artemio Gonzalez “lacks capacity to understand the proceedings against him or to assist in his own defense.”
Gonzalez has been committed into the custody of the Commissioner of the Office of People with Developmental Disabilities for care and treatment in a psychiatric facility. The judge said that the detainment is to last for a period of no longer than a year, until officials at the facility deem him mentally fit.
A grand jury indicted Gonzalez on charges of second-degree attempted murder, first-degree attempted assault, second-degree assault and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon. He will face those felony charges when he is released from the psychiatric facility.
