Officers from the Orangetown Police Department were dispatched to the intersection of Broadway and Main Street in Nyack shortly before 6:15 a.m. on Wednesday morning following a report of a hit-and-run crash where the other driver fled.

While investigating the crash, police said that officers observed a vehicle driving south on Broadway with damage and smoke coming from the front end. After stopping 25-year-old John Diorio, it was determined that he was operating his vehicle while in an intoxicated state.

Diorio was arrested and at Orangetown Police Headquarters, a breathalyzer test determined his blood alcohol content was more than double the legal limit. He was charged with a misdemeanor count of aggravated driving while intoxicated and cited for leaving the scene of an accident. Diorio was released on bail and is due back in Nyack Justice Court later this month to answer the charges.
