At least eight people were killed and 15 injured after a speeding Home Depot pickup truck plowed along a street a few blocks north of the World Trade Center Tuesday afternoon.
Officials are calling the incident a terror attack.
Police shot and captured the 29-year-old driver, ID'd as Sayfullo Habibullaevic Saipov, an Uzbek national who was reportedly heard shouting, "Allahu Akbar." He is currently at Bellevue Hospital with a gunshot wound to the abdomen and reportedly was in possession of a driver's license from Florida.
The NYPD said the rented pickup truck entered the West Street pedestrian/bike path a few blocks north of Chambers Street in Tribeca around 3 p.m. before striking a school bus multiple people on the path. The van then "continued south striking another vehicle. The suspect exited the vehicle displaying imitation firearms (a paintball gun and pellet gun) and was shot by NYPD," police said.
President Trump has been briefed on the incident and his "thoughts and prayers are with all those affected," the White House said.
The New York City Halloween Parade will go on as scheduled, starting at around 7 p.m., officials said.
Rockland County Executive Ed Day was quick to react to the news.
“We watch with shock, sadness and anger as New York City is attacked once again, apparently by terrorists," Day said. "The people of Rockland County stand with our neighbors in New York City as we did on Feb. 26, 1993 and Sept. 11, 2001 when our freedoms were attacked and innocent lives were lost.
"As former commander in the NYPD, I can assure the people of Rockland County that there is a top-notch public safety component in place to keep us safe. As always, if you see something, say something.
"Many people who live in Rockland County work in New York City. Members of the NYPD and FDNY are among them.
"We hope and pray that they and all first-responders are safe. And we grieve for the lives lost today.”
