Park In A Fire Lane, Get Ticketed, Ramapo Police Warn

Police are reminding the driving public that it's illegal to park in a fire lane or no parking zone. Emergency vehicles can't get through and police can't monitor what's going on inside stores, they say.

RAMAPO, N.Y. – Ramapo police want to drive home one simple message: Don’t park where you’re not supposed to.

Nearly half of the 2,600 parking tickets issued so far this year were given to folks who were blocking fire and no-parking zones, mostly in the town’s business districts, they said in a Facebook post.

While some hectic shoppers may thing there’s no harm in pulling up right to the coffee shop and popping in for a quick cup of Joe, they are putting others, and themselves, in danger, police say.

Not only will ambulances and fire trucks not be able to get through in an emergency, police won’t have a clear view of what’s going on inside the store -- and that’s a bad thing, especially if there's an armed robbery, or other crime, being committed, they say.

Police added that they like giving out tickets just about as much as people like getting them, but they will continue to nail violators in order to keep everyone safe.
