RAMAPO, N.Y. -- On the heels of four pedestrians being hit by a driver in Monsey on Monday, the Ramapo Police Department, along with several state agencies, will be conducting an enforcement campaign for pedestrian safety.

The officers will focus on the two most common violations related to pedestrian safety -- pedestrians who violate “Walk/Don’t Walk” signals, and drivers who fail to use due care to avoid pedestrians, Ramapo police said.

On Wednesday, officers will hold an enforcement detail in which a decoy police officer will act as a pedestrian in an intersection. The officer will be entering a crosswalk in an area designated to have a high concentration of pedestrian accidents. A stopping zone will be set up in advance and any drivers who fail to yield to the pedestrian will be stopped and ticketed.

The campaign focuses on the 3 E's of Pedestrian Safety: Education, Engineering, and Enforcement.

Ramapo police have been working on education in a variety of ways including through their Adopt-A-Cop program, in which children are taught about pedestrian safety in the schools. An effort has also been made in the community to educate civic associations and other residents.

The engineering component of the program involves making changes to roadways, sidewalks, and intersections to provide for safer walkways for pedestrians and better vision for drivers, police said.
