The Orangetown Police Department issued an alert on Thursday regarding the scam, after several government and non-profit organizations in Orangetown and Nyack were targeted by scammers.

According to police, in all of the documented cases, the organization’s Treasurer or Finance Director received emails from someone impersonating their supervisor. The emails directed the Treasurer or Finance Director to send wire transfers of several thousand dollars to specific bank accounts for “professional services”.

Police noted that no losses have been reported, though the emails appeared authentic enough that they were only discovered through “the diligence of the intended targets.”

In an effort to protect organizations from a phishing scam, police have said they should consider implementing a policy of verbal confirmation for any and all wire transfers. Any organization that receives an email of this nature have been instructed to report them to the IT Department, local police or the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center.
