RAMAPO, N.Y. -- A Ramapo police detective prevented a man from jumping off the Tappan Zee Bridge Friday night, according to authorities.

While traveling westbound on the bridge, a Ramapo detective observed two men struggling on the bridge roadway about 9:30 p.m., police report.

One man was apparently attempting to prevent the other from leaping off the bridge, according to officials.

The detective, who was returning from the Westchester Medical Center after conducting a follow-up to one of his cases, stopped his vehicle and assisted the other male in restraining the man from jumping, police report.

When the incident was over, the detective requested an ambulance and notified the New York State Police, according to officials.

The state police arrived and took over the scene.
