CLARKSTOWN, N.Y. -- A former Clarkstown North High School athlete has been sentenced to prison for his role in a road rage incident that took the life of a New Jersey woman, according to a report by northjersey.com.

John C. Emili, 24, of New City, was found guilty in April of vehicular homicide, the northjersey.com report said.

Emili and family members cried as he was sentenced to 5 1/2 years behind bars in Superior Court in Hackensack, N.J., last Friday, the northjersey.com report said.

Emili lifted weights and played football at Clarkstown North.

Annetta Billingy, 63, a passenger in Emili’s car, was killed four years ago in the crash on the Garden State Parkway in Washington Township.

Witnesses to the 2012 road rage incident told police that Emili and another driver, Thomas Vanderweit of Saddlebrook, N.J., then 27, were speeding, making numerous lane changes, and tailgating each other.

Emili had been tailgating Vanderweit’s 2007 Chevy Trail Blazer with his 2004 Honda Pilot when Vanderweit “brake-checked” him near Exit 168 and he lost control of his car, according to media reports.

Emili’s car careened into a guardrail, overturned, and then hit Vanderweit’s vehicle.

Billingy, who Emili was driving to church in Spring Valley, was ejected from the car and died. She was not wearing a seat belt.

Vanderweit was found guilty last year of vehicular homicide and was given six years in prison.

He was also ordered to pay Billingy’s funeral expenses.
