The Clarkstown Police Department issued an alert on Friday to residents warning of a fraud attempt that may be “plaguing” Rockland County communities.

Police said that a 69-year-old man reported to them that on Aug. 26 he received a letter in the mail addressed to him from North America Financial Services, with a return address in Canada. Inside, the letter informed him that he won the “Home Mega Sweepstakes Raffle” for $250,000 and it included a check for $6,250, which claimed to be an advanced payment to assist with tax and insurance handling fees.

The letter also told the victim to contact a claims officer by dialing a specific number. Police said that the victim knew it was a scam, and that if he were to have deposited the check, his account information would have been compromised. In this particular instance, the man suffered no financial loss, though police warn that residents should be vigilant.
