Kevin Williams, 24, was arrested after Ramapo officers responded to a suspicious incident at a residence in the Village of Montebello, said Lt. Robert Lancia.

According to police, a woman was home with her granddaughter, when a solicitor came to her door asking to shine the wheels on her car for $20. After the work was done, the suspect entered the house for his payment, and the homeowner reports leaving him alone for a brief moment.

After he was paid and left the area, the woman noticed that two of three wedding rings were missing from a table in her front foyer.

During an investigation, detectives were able to identify Wiliams and later arrested him during a traffic stop in which he was driving on a suspended license.

Lancia said Williams confessed to stealing the rings and the jewelry was recovered and returned to the woman.

He was charged with felony grand larceny and driving with a suspended license. He was released and is due to appear in court later in August.

Ramapo police are reminding residents not to hire unlicensed contractors or let any unknown persons into their homes, especially leaving them unattended. Door--to-door solicitation requires a permit in the Town of Ramapo and residents should call the police if needed.
