Jonathan McNeil, 23, was sentenced to three consecutive terms of 10, 12 and 15 years in state prison after being found guilty of two counts of attempted murder by a jury for the July 10, 2016, attack.
“The defendant wielded a baseball bat and a handgun in a brutal and vicious attack at night upon two innocent people," Zugibe said. "The long prison terms imposed are more than warranted and are just punishment for a terrible crime.”
McNeil attacked his ex-girlfriend and a male friend as she was being dropped off at her Hillcrest home. While the victims sat in her driveway in a 2010 Honda Civic, McNeil smashed the back windshield of the car with a baseball bat, Zugibe said.
The male victim backed out of the driveway and drove off. A short time later, the male victim returned to the address and made another attempt to drop the woman at her home. As the ex-girlfriend stood outside with her mother, McNeil and another individual drove by firing multiple shots from the car.
The young woman was struck in the leg. Multiple rounds struck the driver side of the vehicle where the male was sitting, Zugibe said.
McNeil was arrested on July 12, 2016, following an investigation by the Town of Ramapo Police Department.
Executive Assistant District Attorney Stephen Moore and Senior Assistant District Attorney Cathryn Boera prosecuted the case.
