Suspicious Items Reported At Supermarket, Park In Rockland

NEW CITY, N.Y. -- The Rockland County Sheriff's Office received a report Thursday morning that a suspicious backpack had been found unattended on a picnic bench at Kennedy-Dells Park, causing a lockdown of a nearby community center, said Sheriff Louis Falco.

Officers from the Sheriff’s Office and the Clarkstown Police secured the area and placed the neighboring Street School Community Center in lockdown as a precaution. The Sheriff’s Bomb Squad technicians were called in to examine the package. An x-ray revealed that the backpack did not contain any explosives, Falco said.

The owner of the backpack was identified and said it had been left behind after soccer practice.

Earlier in the day, there was a suspicious package at the ShopRite of New City that was handled by Clarkstown Police. That package also did not contain any dangerous explosives, Falco added.

The Sheriff is encouraging all Rockland residents to call whenever they see anything they think might be suspicious.

" Law enforcement is trained and prepared to handle suspicious incidents like what occurred today," he said. "It is worth repeating: 'If you see something, say something.'"

Residents can call the Rockland County Sheriff's Office at 845-638-5400 to report any crimes or suspicious items.
