Officers were dispatched to the parking lot at approximately 1 a.m. on Thursday morning, where there were reports of the tanker truck leaking a substance that was forming a cloud cover close to the ground. The substance would quickly be identified as cryogenic liquid nitrogen, which was leaking from the rear of the vehicle.

According to police, “while nitrogen is inert, there are hazards which can include freezing of human tissue upon contact. It can also be an asphyxiant, in that it displaces oxygen.”

Crews from the Tallman Fire Department were called on to the scene and used a fan to direct the nitrogen away from first responders and the hotel. Police said the driver proceeded to provide the access key to firefighters, who evaluated the source of the leak, where it was determined a valve was slightly ajar, allowing the nitrogen to escape the tanker.

Firefighters were able to secure the valve and the scene was cleared in less than an hour. No injuries were reported as a result of the incident.
