Clarkstown Chief Sullivan Challenging Supervisor Hoehmann

CLARKSTOWN, N.Y. -- Suspended Clarkstown police chief Michale Sullivan announced Monday he plans to challenge the man who has led the fight to have him removed from the department in this year's election for town supervisor

But revenge is not the reason the savvy chief with years of law enforcement is running for the office.

"I'm very concerned about the state of this town and worried about the mistrust and intimidation that is rampant under George Hoehmann's direction," Sullivan said.

Sullivan, who will run as a Democrat, broke the news in front of about 200 supporters outside of the Veterans Memorial Association in Congers.

"It's not just the employees of Clarkstown, but also the citizens who deserve integrity in a leader," he added. "We need to bring back trust to the town."

Sullivan, who is married with two sons and a granddaughter, has never run for office, but has managed a large police department and believes he could handle all that comes with running a town.

"I have managed a large budget and a large department," he said. "I not only have plans to be realistic about the budget and what's needed but to improve moral as well."

Hoehmann, a Republican, announced last month that he would seek a second term, saying he had lowered taxed and cracked down on illegal housing.

The feud between the two men is a long and complicated saga that begins with Hoehmann bringing in an outside accounting firm to look at the police department to Sullivan's suspension for charges that include everything from erasing his cell phone contents to failure to reassign a sergeant at Hoehmann's demand.

There is a current court battle between the chief and the town in an effort to save his job. One that he would have to leave if he wins the November election.

"I look forward to the election because I believe I can do a better job and help the town and its residents," Sullivan said.
