A church that has been a fixture in the Nanuet community for more than 150 years is being sold and the congregation is seeking a new home.

Grace Baptist Church recently announced they are selling the 60,000-foot building and land on Demarest Avenue for $5.9 million.

The building features four sections, including two fellowship halls, a stained glass sanctuary with balcony, commercial kitchen, several offices, classrooms, nursery and ADA bathrooms. There's also parking for 150-200 cars, said Paul Adler, the listing agent with Rand Commercial Real Estate.

The church's Facebook page leads readers to the real estate's company listing that offers a glimpse inside the house of worship that once boasted a membership of more than 700 in earlier years and is down to about 40 to 70 members today.

The church will most likely be sold to another religious organization but could be divided into lots for homes, Adler said.

"Churches and religious buildings tend to sell to other churches, the same as bank buildings tend to sell to other banks," Adler said.

But, because the property is zone R-10, it could be divided into lots for single-family homes he added.

Adler said the building has had a lot of traffic: "A property such as this doesn't come around all the time."

Interested buyers may contact Adler at (845) 770-1205.
