WAYNE, N.J. – A former starting pitcher at Wayne Hills High School is recovering after being struck in the face by a line drive while pitching for his college’s club team.

Erik Moskal, 22, now a student at Florida Gulf Coast University, was on the mound during the semifinals of the Division II Club Baseball World Series in Kansas on May 22, when the accident occurred, according to a GoFundMe campaign page set up to raise money for his care.

“The baseball struck him in the face around the left eye and Erik is suffering from a concussion, broken nose, damaged orbital area, fractured forehead, and muscle damage to his eye,” Angela Saporito Moskal explained on the page.

When Moskal arrived at the hospital, he was in critical condition and spent two days in the ICU, the page states. Tuesday morning, he underwent his first surgery to repair shattered bones in his face around his eye socket, the page states.

“Now is our chance to help out Erik as he and his family go through this very difficult time. Erik's family and friends are coming together to raise funds to help cover medical and travel expenses for the Moskal Family,” Saporito Moskal wrote.

Nearly $18,000 had been raised by Tuesday afternoon.

Saporito Moskal described the injured athlete as “a caring son, brother, nephew, cousin, coach and friend.”

In addition to pitching during his time at Wayne Hills, Moskal also was a wide receiver and defensive back on the school’s football team that won two consecutive state championships.
