ROCKLAND COUNTY, N.Y. - Following rallying cries from parents and student-athletes alike, recently ousted Pearl River High School varsity football and baseball coach Mike Oliva has been rehired by the district.

The community came together in support of Oliva after he was surprisingly let go by the school district late last month after delivering the school’s first sectional championship in baseball in decades.

No reason was ever disclosed for Oliva’s ousting, though Pearl River Athletic Director Todd Santabarbara noted simply that “coaching positions are year-to-year appointments.”

A former Iona Preparatory athlete and varsity football coach at Irvington High School, Oliva has coached the baseball team in Pearl River for four years, and the football team for the last three.
