Traffic Study Underway For Route 202 Intersection In Montebello

State transportation officials are looking at whether installing traffic signals at Mayer Drive and Route 202 would improve safety following a fatal accident near the intersection in May, lohud.com reports.

MONTEBELLO, N. Y. -- On the heels of a fatal car accident earlier this year near the Route 202 intersection with Mayer Drive in Montebello, state transportation officials are looking at whether traffic signals are needed, according to lohud.com .

But some local people say the intersection was dangerous long before Faith Leigh, 83, was hit and killed in May while crossing Route 202 to get her mail. After the accident, the post office allowed residents to have their mailboxes on the same side of the street so they wouldn't have to cross the road, according to lohud.com.

Dangerous conditions and speeding traffic because of the lack of traffic signals has been a problem for years, neighbors say. Leslie Watson of Suffern said it shouldn't have taken the death of a neighbor for something to be done, lohud.com reports.

The state's study, which looks at several factors including traffic counts and history, is expected to take as long as six months to complete and began in June. County officials said there have been 17 accidents near the intersection from 2009 until May of this year, lohud.com reported.
