Worldwide Community First Responder is hosting an emergency preparedness class at 60 North Madison Ave. on Saturday, Sept. 9 in Spring Valley from noon to 2 p.m.

"We want to help people prepare for disasters so they can stay safe," Jaqueline Cassagnol, who is teaching the class, said.

Cassagnol said the class will teach people how to prepare emergency kits in case they have to leave home, emergency kits in case they have to stay at home and to teach people how to effectively communicate in a disaster, including making sure a phone is fully charged in case you need to dial 911.

Cassagnol said she believes Harvey will cause an increase in attendance. The organization was founded after the 2010 earthquake in Haiti.

Mistakes people make include hiding out in an attic, where they could be trapped and driving in the middle of a flood, Cassagnol said.

"People often panic and don't think," Cassagnol said. "This class can save your life or the life of your family and friends."
