A 22-year-old man is facing an attempted murder charge after police said he brutally assaulted his 96-year-old grandmother during an overnight visit in Dutchess County, leaving her with significant injuries.

A driver was freed from a mangled vehicle after a head-on crash involving a pickup truck and minivan on a busy Putnam County road.
The two-vehicle crash happened on Route 52 in the Lake Carmel area on Saturday, Aug. 8, at around 10:25 p.m., according to the Lake Carmel Fire Department.
Firefighters arrived within minutes and found the pickup truck and minivan with heavy damage, with one person trapped inside a vehicle, the department said.

Town of Newburgh Police Detective Christopher Michael Thompson died surrounded by his family on Saturday, Aug. 8, according to his obituary. He was 35.
