Taub, 21, participated in the college's prestigious Honors Program and graduated with an associate’s degree in liberal arts in 2014. He was elected to serve as the student representative on the Board of Trustees where he lobbied to increase student aid. He also worked to get more funding for student involvement activities, and helped explore the possibility of future campus residence halls, said Laura Incalcaterra, community relations coordinator.

“We welcome Mendel’s enthusiasm and commitment to education and to RCC and its students,” Legislature Chairman Alden H. Wolfe said. “The college will be well-served by his volunteerism.”

The Multi-Services Committee, chaired by Legislator Phil Soskin, approved Taub’s appointment prior to the nod by the full Legislature: “He is an enthusiastic and dedicated young man who will bring fresh perspective to the board and the college,” Soskin said.

Taub, who grew up in the village of New Square, said he is grateful to RCC for his education and the opportunity to serve the public. He credits the Rockland BOCES’ Adult Education Program, which works in collaboration with Rockland Community College, for aiding his academic success.

After receiving the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence, Taub enrolled at Pace University in Pleasantville on a full scholarship. He expects to graduate in May with a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science.

“If I didn’t have RCC, I don’t know If I would have come this far,” Taub said. “I will forever be grateful for the opportunities they have offered me, and will serve with the purpose of ensuring that those opportunities are available for every high school graduate in this county.”

Taub works as a certified Yiddish court interpreter and also as a volunteer emergency medical technician with two local ambulance corps.
