SUFFERN, N.Y. -- The New York-New Jersey Trail Conference is holding a Great Gear raffle tonight and Wednesday from 5 p.m. to 7 pm at the Suffern Community Center, prior to the Banff Mountain Film Festival. The film festival begins 7 p.m. both days at the Lafayette Theater.

Prizes for raffle tickets include backpacks, trekking poles, head lamps. Proceeds for the raffle will benefit the Trail Conference, which maintains 2,150 miles of trails, including Harriman State Park, Bear Mountain State Park, and Sterling Forrest.

Suffern-based Michael Malandra Photography and destination photographer Susan Magnano will raffle a Landscape Photography Workshop, which will be held in the NY area and has a value of up to $300.

On Wednesday, Malandra will raffle a 20×30 framed print from his portfolio of Harriman State Park images.

The Gravity Vault joins in the effort with rock climbing information, and coupons for a free day of climbing and instruction and the Hudson Valley Boy Scouts will be on hand.

The film festival, launched in 1998, screens a melange of mountain-themed films.

Suffern, Sloatsburg, and Tuxedo sit at the heart of hiking territory the Train Conference maintains. The conference and the towns work in harmony to promote hiking, adventure and tourism in the region.

"It's the perfect combination," said Don Weise, the Conference's development and membership director. "People spend a day in the woods. They take the train from Sloatburg to Suffern, where they come to have a drink, a meal and relax."
