Clarkstown Police reported Saturday that there have been a couple of new sightings in the Congers area over the past few days.
"The bears are preparing for the upcoming winter so they are very hungry," police said. "They love it when we leave our garbage outside our homes. If you prefer to not have the bears stop by for a meal we ask that you leave your garbage in your home until the night before trash pickup. As we often remind everyone, bears are wild anials and we should avoid them at all costs."
Black bear populations are largely concentrated in upstate New York but there are smaller populations elsewhere, including the Hudson Valley, according to the state Department of Environmental Conservation
While black bears are omnivores and largely consume grasses, berries, fruit and insects, they will also eat human food, including bird seed, honey and corn.
