Man Chokes Wife, Breaks Her Cell Phone, Ramapo Police Say

RAMAPO, N.Y. -- A 23-year-old New Hempstead man is behind bars after he allegedly choked his wife and broke her cell phone Sunday night, Ramapo Police said.

Christmas evening at about 7:20 p.m., police responded to a radio-run of a husband/wife domestic dispute in the Village of New Hempstead.

The husband, whose name has not been released, had fled the scene prior to the officers’ arrival, police said.

The wife accused the husband of choking her and breaking her cell phone when she attempted to call the police.

The man, who was located, arrested and charged with criminal mischief and criminal obstruction of breathing or blood circulation, was arraigned before a Town of Ramapo Court Justice. He was subject was sent to the Rockland County Jail while he attempts to secure bail.
