Sara Ferraro of West Nyack received a certificate and college scholarship of $1,500 for her volunteer service as an EMT with the New City Volunteer Ambulance Youth Corps from Chan Rivera, member of the FASNY Board of Directors.

“I have a passion for helping people, and joining the ambulance corps gave me a platform to pursue this passion," Ferraro said. "My time as an EMT has solidified my goal of becoming a surgeon so that I can continue to help people through medicine."

Ferraro plans to attend Notre Dame to pursue a pre-med track. She hopes to someday become a surgeon and leader in medicine.

She served as vice president of her school’s student council, a peer mentor, captain of the volleyball and softball teams and a volunteer at the St Francis of Assisi Church.

“I am so thankful for this scholarship because the ambulance corps has shaped who I am," Ferraro said. "Being able to represent New City Volunteer Ambulance Youth Corps through the FASNY scholarship is such an honor."

Ferraro is one of 25 students chosen for a FASNY scholarship.

Scholarships are awarded on the basis of an applicant’s volunteer service to his or her community, such as serving with a local fire department, scouting, church, school, work with senior citizens, fire prevention, and other projects. Additional criteria include consistent demonstration of good character and completion of a written essay.

The Gerard J. Buckenmeyer FASNY Volunteer Scholarship program is made possible each June through the generous donations of individuals, fire departments and auxiliaries.

Founded in 1872, the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York represents about 105,000 volunteer firefighters and emergency medical personnel in New York state.
